Symptoms and Causes of Low Sex Drive in Women

1 » 2 » 3 » 4

A woman's sex drive may change due to a number of factors related to her love, personal and professional life, and, in most cases, it is not a major concern. However, if the lack of sexual desire begins to interfere with the relationship, it may be necessary to address the problem.

Sex drive is based on a complex interaction of several factors, including physical and emotional well-being, intimacy with partner, positive and/or negative sexual experiences and even religious beliefs. If you are experiencing any problem in one of these areas your sex drive may be affected. We will now go through the symptoms and the most common causes that may affect women's desire for sex.

The following symptoms indicate low sex drive:

symptoms that indicate low sex drive-_Complete lack of sexual interest in any kind of sexual activity, including self-stimulation.

- Absence or significant decrease of sexual fantasies.

- Permanent feeling of annoyance and lack of responsiveness to sexual stimulation by the partner.

Any of these three signs may indicate a low libido in women and will require treatment. If the three of them are happening at once, it is highly recommended to seek urgent help. The causes of low sex drive can be physical, psychological and hormonal problems, most commonly the ones described below.

The main physical causes of low sex drive are:

- Sexual problems. When women experience pain during sex or are unable to orgasm, it is normal to not feel desire for sex.

- Health problems. Many nonsexual diseases can cause sex drive to decrease, such as cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and other cardiac or neurological diseases.

physical causes of low sex drive-_Medication. Many medicines, especially antidepressants, act strongly on the decrease of sexual desire.

- Unhealthy lifestyle. Alcohol, drugs and tobacco abuse can have a strong, negative impact on women’s sexual desire. Smoking, for instance, decreases blood flow, which can reduce sex drive.

- Fatigue. Exhaustion as a result of a tiring, stressful routine that includes work and the responsibility for children’s care can also lead to low sex drive. Fatigue from illness will have the same effect. A tired or impaired woman won’t think about sex.

- Surgery. Surgeries can affect sex drive, especially the breast and genital tract ones, or any other that affects the self-image.

The main psychological causes of low sex drive are:

psychological causes of low sex drive-_Stress. Stress and anxiety are real powerful sex drive killers. A stressed or anxious woman for whatever reason is unlikely to have a high libido.

- Mental problems. The issues are not necessarily real - any psychological problem, real or imaginary, can affect sexual desire.

- Low self-esteem. A low self-esteem or a negative image of the body, caused by overweight, for instance, can alter the way we cope with sex.

- Negative experiences. Any negative experience related to sex can lead to the decrease of desire. Sexual abuse or activities that conflict with the ideal of or even religion can be amongst the psychological problems that affect sex drive.

The main hormonal causes of low sex drive are:

- Menopause. Oestrogen levels have a significant decrease during menopause, which will naturally lead to reduced sexual desire and occasionally to dryer vaginal tissues, and all together will result in uncomfortable and painful sex. It is important to point out that not all women will experience a damped sex drive during menopause, but some will need help to deal with the problem.

- Pregnancy. Hormone changes during pregnancy and right after its end, which can significantly affect sex desire. The fatigue and pressures of the pregnancy itself can also reduce sex drive.

- Breast-feeding. Breast-feeding and its psychological effects, as well as the fatigue that the care for a newborn brings about and the lack of sleep are other important cause of the de low sex drive. The dedication and interest for the baby may also put the partner – and the sex – to second place.

Ultimately, there are problems in the relationship itself:

Causes of Low Sex Drive in Women-_Intimacy. Most women consider the intimacy with the partner as a key requirement to sexual desire. That said, when there is a relationship problem, that will have a real, strong impact in sex drive.

- Lack of interest from the partner. A move away or a change in the partner's interest can cause disturbances in sexual desire. For instance, if the partner starts to spend more time at work or if his own personal problems reduce the time available for the relationship, that can result in a damped sex drive in women.

Those are essentially the main symptoms and causes of low sex drive in women. If you feel that your desire for sex is not what it used to be, try to find out what might be leading to that situation and make an effort towards addressing the problem.
